Shiver

Maggie Steifvater Book
Stiefvater, M. (2009). Shiver. New York, Ny: Scholastic Press.

When Grace was nine she was attacked by wolves and was saved by a yellowed eyed wolf. Grace is 17 now and during the cold winter months she gets to see her yellowed eyed wolf in the woods.  She is sure that this wolf is the one that saved her. When Jack, a high school student is killed by wolves, a hunting party search the woods to hunt the wolves. Grace finds a wounded boy (Sam)on her back porch. When she takes a look at the Sam’s yellow eyes she realizes this is her wolf but as a human. They start to fall in love. Then they find out that Jack is still alive and turns into a werewolf. Sam tries to kill Jack because he doesn’t want Sam to tell the world the secret of the wolves.  Jack discovers that Grace did not turn into a werewolf after being attacked by the wolves. So desperate for a cure, he kidnaps Grace and Sam. Jack’s sister Isabel believes that Grace didn’t turn because of a fever Grace had. She gets the infected blood to inject Jack and Sam. But Sam becomes a werewolf and runs away while Jack later dies. Grace thinks Sam is dead but they later reunite when he turns back into a human.

This book is a beautifully written story about werewolves and first love and sure to engage fans of Twilight. A book recommended for grades 9 and up. Other books written by this author include, Linger, Forever, Sinner, The Dream Thieves, and The Raven King.
